COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The Cardiac Arrest Response (CAR) re-certification course requires registered nurses (RNs) certified in CAR to demonstrate the delegated acts of (a) defibrillation; (b) transcutaneous pacing; (c) and administration of life-saving medications.  In addition, participants are required to complete a re-certification test with a passing mark of greater than or equal to 90%.

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this course, the learner will demonstrate the ability to:

1. State the purpose and indications for defibrillation, cardioversion, and transcutaneous pacing. 

2. Recognize lethal dysrhythmias for which defibrillation and transcutaneous pacing are indicated.

3. Demonstrate safe defibrillation and transcutaneous pacing in the adult patient. 

4. Identify the medications that may be given in a cardiac arrest.

5. State the doses for medications that may be given in a cardiac arrest. 

6. Demonstrate treatment priorities of patients experiencing cardiac arrest. 

7.  State roles and responsibilities in a cardiac arrest situation with or without a physician present.

This course contains pre-learning for nursing orientation. It is required to be completed prior to the unit theory day outlined in your orientation schedule. The certificate of completion must be provided to your CNS on this date. Failure to do so will result in you being excused from the session.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two day interactive workshop in suicide first aid. ASIST teaches participants to recognize when someone may have thoughts of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. ASIST is a mandatory course for current staff of the TBRHSC Mental Health Programs, it is mandatory that participants attend both consecutive days of training.

GPA (Gentle Persuasive Approach) Training Course:

GPA is an innovative dementia care education curriculum based on a person-centred care approach. Designed for interdisciplinary point of care staff across healthcare sectors, GPA is delivered as four modules over a 7.5-hour day.The session is evidence-based, interactive and practical. GPA Certified Coaches guide participants to fully understand responsive behaviours in order to be able to respond effectively and appropriately in a workplace setting. GPA also includes respectful self-protective and gentle redirection technique for use in situations of risk.

By taking this course you will learn:

  • Information about dementia and person-centred care
  • How the disease process relates to a person’s behavioural response
  • How to apply emotional, environmental, and interpersonal communication strategies to prevent and diffuse responsive behaviours
  • Suitable and respectful protective techniques to use in situations of risk

Lead II only for Required Staff that need it for employment on specific units.
